Hi, firstly please let me apologise for my lack of computer knowledge and any replies I would appreciate in very simple terms ... I do not have a technical brain!!
I have broadband supplied by a cable company, I have a modem and desktop PC with a DLink DL-524 router connected so that myself and my daughter are able to use our laptops without having to sit at the desk all night (lazy eh!!) This set up has worked fine for 18 months or so!!
Last week I moved house, I have had the same cable company connect my broadband and expected to just switch on our laptops and everything work as previously. Even though it shows that both our laptops have excellent strength connection to the router, neither of us can connect to the internet, when I look at the network connection it says we have "local access only". Like I said I am hopeless with computers but any advice would be really appreciated. I did manage to find an option to do a network diagnosis and I got a message saying "windows tried to repair but a problem still exists - cannot communicate with primary DNS server (62.31.176.39)

First, you need to verify your router is working correctly.
Ensure the internet connection from the provider goes into the WAN port of the router. It should look as follows:
cable >> modem >> router (WAN port)
Then, plug your laptop into a LAN port on the router with a network cable.
Once your connected, you will need to access the router's management interface to ensure it's connecting properly. To access the management interface, open a web browser and type the IP address of the router into your browsers URL field and hit Enter. In the management interface, there should be a 'statistics' page that will show if the router is connecting properly.
If it's not, then you need to call your provider.

Thanks, I have tried that but because I brought the router separately and they didnt provide it they wont help.
