I have 2 computers (1-W2Kpro and 1-Win98SE)connected with ethernet cards running through a hub. The W2K has a second card connected direct to my cable modem. My problem is this: The W2K system can see the 98 system and access all files. The W98 machine cannot see the W2K system at all. I have selected the files and they show that they are sharing (small hand). Now I know that the machines are communicating because I play multiplayer games over IPX all the time and that works fine. Also the W98 system has intermittent connectivity to the internet. Sometimes it is there and other times it's not. I will gladly share any setup info with anyone that may be willing to help me.

Add the same user credentials you have on the w98 box to the win2k system. This way, the win2k system will recognize the w98 as a authenticated user. F.ex. if the user on the w98 system is called "foo" without any password. Add user "foo" to the w2k system with blank password.

Win 98 (Fat32) Can not see Win2000 (NTFS) file partitions. You need create a fat32 partition on your hard drive on the 2000 machine, so your Win98 machine can see it.

Digital Dude, you are incorrect. The file system of a shared drive has no effect on a client machine's ability to "see" the share. Win98 can see/read/write to an NTFS share on a Win2k machine.

Steven W, more information on how you are providing internet access to the Win98 machine would be helpful. Are you using ICS on the Win2k machine? NAT?

Are the Win98 machine and the Win2k machine in the same domain?

Also, you may want to utilize a host file to remove any problems with WINS naming.

Here is some follow up:

I have set the user ID/password for log on on the 98 system. I set up an account on the W2K system to match with full access rights. Both systems are in the same workgroup, however I do not have a domain set. I have checked member of workgroup box and set the workgroup name the same on both systems. Member of domain is not checked. As for the internet connection, I have the ICS enabled on the W2K card that is connected to the modem.

I have the following installed:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Print Sharing
NetBeui
NWlink NetBIOS
NWlink IPX
TCP/IP

Any other information that I may give to help solve this just ask me. Thanks for all of you that are trying to help me!

Magnus response worked for me. I logged on to both machines as Administrator and same password (case must match) I could at least map network drives to each drive on the Win/2k machine

Steven,

Follow Magnus' advice to create a user on the w2k machine, identical in name to the one on the w98 machine. Then the vital part: in the properties of the drive-to-be-shared, set the sharing permission to "authenticated users" (add this one and remove "everyone".) It worked for me like this. Best of luck.
