I need to find out if there is a way to set a permanent IP for my wired network printer. Everytime I turn off my printer, the printer have to acquired a new IP from the router and I have to set up the new printer IP for all five computer in my house. Is there a way to set up my DLINK DI 634M (MIMO) to assign a permanent IP? We don't usually use the printer 24 hrs only at least 2-3 times a week at night for kids homework. Printer is Brother MFC 640W.

You should be able to set a static IP for any or all of the devices on the network that are connected by a cat5 cable. You can disable DHCP if you so desire.

Why use DHCP to set a fixed IP address to a printer on a small network. Look in the documentation that came with the printer. It's on page 31 of the Quick Setup Guide (if you have a MFC640CW printer.)

Harold, Pg 31 is for Mc OS. Anyway, I did set up my system using the manual and its working. But If have to turn off or unplug the printer the old IP is gone and new IP address will register. I will try setting the static IP later tonight. Thanks

I'm not overly familiar with Brother printers. I've worked mainly with HP and Lexmark's. All of their network printers are designed to have the IP assigned and the information is saved within the printer itself so it retains it even if the printer is shut off.

If that's not the case with your printer then perhaps you should consider spending a little extra $ next time on a quality printer. You tend to get what you pay for when it comes to computers and peripherals and saving a few dollars is often not worth the trouble you get afterwards.

Since you can't assign an IP and have it stay, check the management interface on your router. Within the DHCP setup you should be able to assign a specific IP address to a specific MAC address. This would work for your printer since it must have a MAC address.

If you don't know the MAC address, you should be able to find out what it is within the router's interface while the printer is on and attached to the network.
