I cannot get my win98 laptop onto my network with my two win2k boxes, i've set up a user on the win2k boxes for the win98 to use and assigned a gateway/subnetmask/ip but nothing seems to work, please help.

Did you give your laptop a name and assign it to the same workgroup as your Win2K machines?

Just make sure your ip & subnet are set. Set same workgroup name. Have ONLY tcp/ip running on the clients and have it on the server as well.
Dont set a gateway, not needed.
From the command line, ping the server ip, if you cant hit it, there may be a NIC problem.
Try the loop-back ping 127.0.0.1 to check to see if your NIC is working.
Set the logon to be to a microsoft network and set it to log onto the domain name you set up on the server. Domain name MAY NOT be the same as your workgroup name, it depends on how it was set up on the server.
Good luck
