ok...I want 2 PC's hidden from the rest of the network, but still sharing our net connection...

Equipment:
Cisco router (not sure what model) as our DHCP, uplinked to a 8 port linksys switch. 6 other PC's sharing files.

WITHOUT: A proxy or any expensive hardware, or passwords... AND...we can't touch the router.. (supplied by our ISP) so Vlans are not an option. the 2 pc's will be for public use and can't be locked down.

How can I accoplish this?....hardware solution preferably

any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Buy a cheap home type router and connect to the switch - put the two PCs behind the home router.

That was my first thought...have the home router get a DHCP address from the first router....But the home router would act as a gateway to the other network would it not?

Even if I gave the 2 PC's on the home router IP's on a different subnet?

The two might be able to access the LAN but the LAN PCs could not get past the home router.

Then put the 6 PCs on the home router (you may need either an eight port router or another switch or hub) and put the two PCs on the existing switch. On your switch you would have the uplink to the Internet, the two PCs and the WAN side of the home router. On the LAN side of the router would be the six PCs.

buy a switch that can do vlans. vlan 2 pcs to the internet. vlan the other to the same internet connection. Trick here is the connection to the internet must support two vlans minimum.
