Help! Internet keeps disconnecting!

Specs: XP, 3g

Hi, please help as I have no idea how to fix my problem. My internet connection(ADSL) keeps disconnecting for no apparent reason after 1/2 - 1 hour. The only way i can re-connect is by re-booting my system, then it works again for about the same amount of time. I have tried a full virus scan and re-installing my firewall but still it is the same. Its only been doing this for about a week now but i cant figure out why.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated, im geting very frustrated and am close to wiping the hard drive and starting again at this point but dont want to do that if there is a better way.

Thanks.

Davie

When it stops do you still have a DSL light on the modem itself ? Also make sure you have no power saving turn on where it will shut things off after a half hour of use . Make sure nic card setting is set for auto for speed and duplex. Also some firewalls have time settings where if you don't use it for awhile it locks the internet , I know zonealarm has this .

Good advice vipergg...

Also...DSL is distance limited to about 20,000 ft from your telephone companys switching office...once you get out to about 18,000 ft the connection can become "unstable"...

It is the responsibillity of your DSL supplier to provide you with a stable connection...if they cannot, then they should have not connected you in the first place...

Call tech support, tell them your problem...they can run a number of tests on your line, among them is, the distance your are from the DSLAM...ask the tech to tell you how far away you are...

If you are getting close to 18,000 ft or so, then find out from the tech what they can do to stablize your DSL line...

Even if it has been stable in the past, your phone company might have been doing some wire re-routing that is creating problems for you...

Hope this helps

Is there A router involved in your connection?
If there is it may have somthing to do with ip lease times
if not and this is a direct connection to the phone company, then the weather may be the problem. If the weather is bad like alot of rain you may have a water problem in the telephone cable any where from your home to the telephone office. if the problem goes away when the weather gets dryer their is stil a problem that will eventualy deteriorate the line, eventualy the static or connection will stay even in dry weather. next you will loose the signal completely it will then be real easy for the phone technichian to find the problem

Thanks a lot for your help guys. It turns out my problem is my firewall(Zonealarm free edition). I know this because when i turn it off my internet goes along merrily all day without disconnecting. Unfortunately I am unable to find the time setting one of you mentioned in the above posts, could you direct me as where to find it? Also i have had zonealarm for over a year now with no issues so why all of a sudden is it causing me these problems?
