I've got a new pc, and I want to transfer some files, programs and other stuff from my old pc. Is there a cable I can use to connect the pc's?? if so, whats it called?. If its not that simple, can anyone advise what i need to do?.
Many thanks
Darren

you can either use the search function at top of page for the trillions of posts on this subject or look at http://www.wown.com

U require Cross Cable for the connection of two pc. cable connection are widely available on net. or check out with your hardware vendor.

G'day,
Searching is great if you know what you are looking for... so, you have two options:
Set up a client / server relationship with a network connection (do the machines have network cards?)
Go for the Direct Cable Connection option.
For either one you will require the correct cable (your local computer store should be able to supply you with either once you tell them which one you want)
DCC is the easiest, but I don't think that it is the fastest.
If you have a lot of files it will be tedious.
If you choose the DCC option, go for the parallel cable (as opposed to the serial option).
Read your WIN98 help file on DCC connections and see how you get on.
Good luck and seasons greetings,
Elric

DCC is very slow. If you have a NIC (network interface card) in each PC then all you require is a crossover cable (not cross cable Prasmin....but you were close) Install the NetBEUI protocol on both PC's and you should be good to go for transferring files.
If you're technically minded and know your way around a PC's hardware reasonably well, the other (faster) alternative is to slave the old hard drive into the new PC and copy the data that way.
NOTE: if you do decide to go with DCC, you will require a Null Modem Cable. This is a very specific cable (like the crossover Cat5 cable) so don't get talked into buying a plain printer (parallel) cable by mistake or you'll be going back to the store to exchange it. Also note, most pimply faced kids masquerading as sales people in large chain stores don't know a crossover from a straight cable, nor a null modem cable from a printer cable so make sure you check the bag the cable is in before buying...most state the purpose of the cable inside quite plainly.

Networkcard (x-cable) solution 1:
Most Pc have a network card, get a crosslinked cable and attache it to both pc at the network cards, if u are using win98se things are easier- go to network neighborhood and creat a home network... a wizard will lead u through, same applies to higher versions of windows. eventully a diskette will be created that u will use to configure the other machine (old pc) automatically ***remember to share your hardisk over the network***
MASTER SLAVE HARDDISK CONFIGURATION
This is the cheapest with no cost incured, open both PC, remove the hardisk from the old PC an attach it to the new machine ***here's how - simply detach the cd rom IDE cable at the CD-rom end, attache it to the old hardisk, put the power cable & remember to put the old HDD as slave on its jumper settings found behind the HDD***
Power the machine---if your bios is modern as ur machine it will automatically detect it so will windows alternatively go to bios by pressing DEL key or F1 as u restart the PC, load BEST/OPTIMAL PERFOMANCE SETTINGS and save at exit (this is a quicker way for nivice users)
now u have both HDD at MY Computer, copy & paste your folder/filesMerry x-mass
