Subject: help a newbie with IP address question
Comment:

I am running a network of about 40 win2k stations and 3 win2k servers. My Ip adress
starts from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.44, subnet 255,255,255,0.

I have heard that i can/should run my workstations on 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.40
and my servers at 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.3.

Is this true? what happens to my subnet if yes? should my servers and workstations
be on the same level IP address?

Please help a newbie out, thanks.

You can use any of those IP address on your network, it all comes down to preference .

Example 192.168.0.X 255.255.255.0

I make all my router eth0 interfaces the first host of the subnet (192.168.0.1) and some use the last host of the subnet (192.168.0.254) It does not matter, you can make it 192.168.0.67 if you wanted to.

the rule of thum, but you can do whatever
you want to is

192.168.0.1 (router)
192.168.0.10-20 (servers)
192.168.0.40-150 (computers)
192.168.0.30-39 (maybe printers)

you get the Idea...

Someone else might do something diff.. then me.

have heard that i can/should run my workstations on 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.40
and my servers at 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.3.

I thinking you made a typo here 192.168.1.1 and you meant to use 192.168.0.1??????

no typo, i was told something like i should run servers at 192.168.0.1.1-192.168.1.3 and workstations at 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.40 or wiseversal. And change my subnet to i think 255.255.0.0 . Does that ring a bell in any way?

Brian has the right of it and I tend to use a similar addressing scheme as he does. Since you have an existing setup there's no point in changing anything except to maybe put all the servers in the same 10 IP address range (90 - 100 or 150 -160...or something like that since you've already used 1 through 44). With such a small LAN, subnetting like someone told you to do makes no sense at all and at this point just means extra work...as the saying goes...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I think what i will do is start my servers from 192.168.0.254 and count down, and keep my workstations the way they are ie. 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.40.

Does everyone agree?

Here i have done the following, what do you think?

192.168.0.254 PDC
192.168.0.253 File server
192.168.0.252 backup file server
192.168.0.1-10 print servers
192.168.0.11-51 workstations

I think this should be o.k. for now till i run out of ip addresses. right?
