Sorry, but the computer is 200 miles from me so i don't have all the full details. But from what I understand is this is a DSL connection with nothing but the modem and computer involved (ethernet). I'm told the connection was working fine until IE7 got installed. Now the computer will obtain an ip address but will not connect to the web nor will it ping a site using the command prompt. BTW-The connection works fine when another system is connected to the modem.
The owner restored the computer to an earlier date thinking that might help.
The only think I can tell from not being in front of it is that the internet connection icon located in network connections cannot be enabled nor does it have any properties listed when checking the settings. My limited understanding of the internet connetion icon is that it's used with ICS so i don't know if it even pertains to this issue or not. The next time I'm able to talk with the owner, I was going to have them see what services might or might not be running.I know I've given limited information but it will be a few weeks before I am able to get in front of the computer and check it out locally. Thanks for any insight on some things to check.

This link may help a bit.

check the windows firewall settings
Knowing the correct answer and giving a correct answer, are two different things

Exactly if they have a software firewall anywhere they need to allow the new IE7 version access to the internet , this pertains to XP firewall , Zonealarm or whatever they may be running .
