Hi - ok this is the problem I have and im baffled by it. I have 2 machines - 1 running xp pro and the other win 2003 server. Problem is this - the win 2003 server can connect to the gigabit switch no problem but my win xp pro computer cant. I get a blue light (meaning gigabit is achievable) on the switch for both pcs but with the xp pro pc i get the 'limited or no connectivity' message. The xp machine will work with a 10/100 switch though. Any suggestions would be much appreciated?! Thanks!

Chris:
Is the ethernet cable on the XP system of the proper specification to achieve gigabit speeds (cat 5e or 6)? Are you sure the network card in the XP system is gigabit capable? Have you downloaded/installed the latest driver for the network card (XP system) from the card manufacturers website? Have you checked any settings that can be manually configured on the network card driver (XP system) to see if you can force gigabit speeds?
Harold

As above. Also if the switch is managed, is it enabled for gig?
Could also be a bad from factory cable, or nic.Could the limited connectivity issue be an IP issue rather than a connection issue?

Thanks for the suggestions - the card is a gigabit card, i have tried several cat 5e cables, got the latest drivers and tried to force gigabit speeds. It may be an IP issue - if so how would i know? Help!

How could IP be a issue when the hardware isn't working properly? OSI model. Hardware = layer1
IP = layer3I am going to assume you tried connecting with known working patch cable and known working gigabit port on the switch.
That leaves the gigabit card as being defective if it can only do 10/100 and not 10/100/1000
Can you connect with this card and switch if you set to 100mb? Can't tell from your response "will work with a 10/100 switch though" if you tried this with the gig switch.

Hi again - heres an update. Today i tested connecting another 2 pcs into the gigabit switch using their standard onboard 10/100 and even they didnt work (they work fine when plugged into my regular 10/100 switch). So - im now thinking maybe the gigabit switch is faulty. Does that sound right? I really thought this would be a 5 minute job and am going mad over it! Thanks for the help!

I would agree the switch is bad. It should autodetect and step down to at least 100mb
It should be a 5 minute job .If there had been any mention of service pack two being involved the above link would apply. Since the pcs work with 100mb we know SP2 isn't the issue here.
