I have one PC running Win98 2nd Edition and it's connected directly by cable to our Netgear WGR614 (version 2) wireless hub. The Netgear hub is connected to our cable modem.
We recently got a new PC running WinXP Home (w/ SP2). I've connected it to our wireless hub with a Microsoft external wireless antenna which plugs into a USB port. The new PC connected to the hub with no problems and has internet access.
The problem I have is that the two PCs can't see each other. I ran XP's Network Setup Wizard and created a network setup floppy for the Win98 PC, but they still can't see the workgroup or each other. Can someone help me with this?
Best Regards,
- Hans

Incidentally, the XP PC came with Norton. I'm beginning to wonder if I need to do something about the firewalls.
The Win98 is protected only by the NAT firewall in the hub.

98's default workgroup name is "Workgroup"
XP's default workgroup name is "MSHome"You need to have them both in the same workgroup name.
Once you do that. Then put the XP CD into the 98 machine and let it launch.
Then choose additional task. Then choose. Setup a home or small office network. You will need to have the same logon name and password that is on the XP machine.
Reboot each PC when the wizard finishes.

this could also be the case of your isp only providing one ip address. 98 had it but now xp is grabbing it. 98 didn't have auto ip assigning so it would end up with no ip address unless your isp was providing you two internet addresses [would be cheaper to have a router]

Both PCs already had their workgroup names changed to the same one we use in our household.
I found that I needed to shutdown my Norton PC Firewall for the two to see each other. They could see each other even with the WinXP PC Firewall up.
I tried changing setting the IP address for my Win98 XP as part of my trusted network in Norton but it still won't appear when the firewall is turned back on. I'm thinking I may just have to leave the Norton firewall deactivated.
:-(
