Hi i'm getting "General Failure" when trying to ping the gateway ip on my network. when i try to ping a regular website it just hangs there. My internet has been working fine until last week, all the sudden. Internet is not connecting. this computer is on a student dorm network. all other pcs on network are online. It is definately not a bad cable, not a bad network jack, and i ran the winsock fix to repair the TCP already in case that was bad. the network connection shows that i am plugged in and connected and i get a valid ip through dhcp, i think my NIC went bad???
I have researched the net for "General Failure" when using ping, but no answers found. anyone seen this before?

ping localhost or ping 127.0.0.1 as this is the loopback test for the NIC. If it fails then your NIC is bad.

Try booting with "Safe Mode With Networking" and pinging from there. If this works then the most likely cause of this issue is an incorrectly configured software firewall. McAfee Personal Firewall occasionally has issues if you have specified the wrong type of internet connection. You may find that in this case, dial-up access works fine yet LAN access doesn't work.
