gateway onboard ethernet stopped working

Specs: Windows xp , Pentium 4 / 512mb
We had a storm the power went out when the power came back and I started my computer I had no internet. It is a gateway desktop MFATXPNT YKT 500X bought in 2003. I have tried loading drivers no luck and I have tried a usb ethernet adapter in which the computer says it can't load the drivers. Is it time for a new computer

It sounds like your network interface is fried. If the unit is not under warranty you'll want to make sure you have an unused PCI slot. If you do, the simple solution is to buy a PCI NIC (network interface card) and install it in the unused PCI slot.
