>> I delete the gateway I cant access the internet. <<

Of course you can't. This is your gateway to the Internet which is on a completely different network to your LAN. Thats what the Internet is; INTER connected NETworks.

A gateway is a path between two networks just like a five barred gate is a path between two farmers fields.

The gateway address is in fact the IP address of your router/modem. It allows your LAN to communicate with the outside world via the Gateway address.

Stuarts - I think the OP is talking about the other Gateway known as Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client. If you want to remove it, see the link below.

I think somehow that computer joined the Internet Connection Sharing (might be enabled accidentally?), that's why you saw that gateway connection and it must be available for you to access Internet. Take a look on this Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) tutorial, and then disable the ICS if you don't need it.

Hope this is what you are looking for..

Sorry I have got confused now.Enable/disable? ICS? Internet Gateway discovery control? I have read the tutorials but still dont know what i am supposed to be doing. I just want a wireles internet connection from my host pc to my laptop. I just never used to see a gateway icon and I now I do. Nothing has been altered in the wireless router/modem.
I am able to access the internet albeit I seem to be dropping a connection more than I used to. Can somebody advise very simply for me please, i am a bit of a novice compared to you.
manyt thanks

If you already have wireless router in your network, then you can just forget about Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). This is actually the software based approach to share Internet connection.

Configure your wireless router correctly, then configure your computer's wireless adapter to match the wireless setting on wireless router. This is the way you can connect to router wirelessly and access Internet.

If you just want a wireless connection (not Internet connection) from your host pc to your laptop, then you need to set up ad-hoc wireless network. Of course I would assume both computers are equipped with wireless adapter.

Hope helps..

I have a wired ( as in plugged in mains) wireless netgear modem/router on pc wireless card in laptop...I did set up router ( have lost password at mo so will have to do reset I presume) I have WPA encryption on both devices...router and card. I dont know where ICS is enabled and as for ad hoc I am a complete newbie to that. Just want to share the connection for now not bothered about files/printers etc

Many thanks for your help
