Subject: FTP Slow one direction?OS: xpCPU/Ram: 2.2/2GIGModel/Manufacturer: HP |
Comment: Thanks for taking the time to read this and possibly help me, because I am at a complete loss here. Basically, I have an internal 100Mbps network on a Cisco switch. Certain devices on the network, not all, are experiencing slow downs on their network transfers. Upon investigation, using ftp, I see that the speeds are normal in one direction ( put ) and very slow in the other direction ( get ). Duplex has been checked and toggled just for giggles. Usually works best at a fixed 100 Full setting on the box and switch. Switch doesn't show an abnormal amount of collisons. Very few dropped paskets. One time I powered off the pc and rebooted and everything was fine for the whole day. Next day, slow transfers again. This doesn't always work. And btw, one box is Windows and the other is Linux, just to mix things up for you. Replaced cables, purchased CAT5e, as short as possible. No change. I have to believe it's something to do with the Cisco Switch handshaking with the devices, but I can't prove it. Other devices on the network have a bandwidth utilization of almost 94Mbps. They seem to fly. Well, that's about all I think of at the moment. If you need any further info pls get back to me. I will do my best to provide it. Thanks. Mike __________________ Michael J Ayers

Reply: (edit)I have 3 windows and one FreeBSD box on my home network. I used TCPOptimizer.exe on the windows boxes and it worked wonders. The most I could do on the FreeBSD box was set the MTU since I couldn't find a similar program for Unix. I use FreeBSD as an in house FTP server like you do and the speeds are fine so far. How big are the files that you transfer? If put is slow, it might not be a network problem. It could be the speed at which the Linux box writes to the HD.
