Hi,

I've just rebuilt my parents PC for them by reinstalling windows XP from scratch. All went well until I plugged the network cable in the back and the internet was not detected. No IP assigned... it defaults with invalid IP 169.xx.xx.xx, if I do ipconfig /release /renew, the IP just gets changed to 0.0.0.0.

I've completely ruled out the DSL modem / router as the connection works fine when plugged into another PC. I've also tried removing the router and plugging directly from the DSL modem.

Moving the cable to my laptop is fine - the internet is picked up instantly, but then moving the cable back to the parent's PC - still no joy.

Any ideas?

Go to Device Manager and see if there is a problem with the nic. Even if there isn't reinstall the drivers for the nic. If you know what type of nic card it is go download their drivers from the manufacturer web page. Don't use the standard driver if possible.
