Comment:

I have a desktop connected to my dorm's LAN and would like to add a newly purchased laptop to the network via firewire. My desktop already has a unique IP address of 192.168.2.110 and since 192.168.2.111 is taken up by someone else obviously I can't assign that to my laptop. Do I need to configure my firewire IP to the same one as my LAN connection on my desktop? How should I setup my laptop's configuration? Thanks for helping!

Firewire is not the way to go.

Get a router and share you IP address.

I assume that your laptop also has an ethernet port.
