I have set up a network with 2windows2000 pcs and on windows xp pc. It caused a lot of problems but eventually it was realised that the main issue was the firewall. Can anyone tell me what needs to be turned off to enable the computers to remain networked and the firewall to be in place.

It sounds as though ZoneAlarm is blocking your intranet IPs. ZoneAlarm can be configured to "trust" other PC's within your network. I believe it's located under advanced settings. Have ZA allow incoming and outgoing connections from the IP of the other PC, assuming you have TCP/IP installed and configured.
