firewall and network issue

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP, 1.808 GHz / 1983 MB
Not sure which Category I should be in. Forgive me if I have chosen the wrong one.

I have two computers, both XP, that I connect via a VNC.
Usually, but not always I am unable to connect until the person at the other end turns the firewall off. Then after the connection has been made he turns the firewall on again. All is well from then on.

I also have the same problem with other computers on my own LAN.

What's going on here?

It sounds like you need to create a port forward for your VNC connection. What you need to know to do it is the number of the port VNC uses and the IP address of the machine you wish to connect to. Then you go into the firewall and setup a forward that says:

port # to IP address

Port # = VNC port number
IP Address = IP of target PC
