You have to use software that will scan for open ports. Once the software is finished it will tell you which ports are open (in which case you can say that all the other ports that are not on the list are closed). I would use the following software to scan for open port (it's free): http://download.com.com/3000-2648-10118149.html?tag=lst-3-6 Good Luck.

Do you need to know if the port is open for an outbound connection? (ie connecting to an FTP server) or to an inbound connection (ie BEING the FTP server) As you mentioned in your post port 80 would be open to outbound traffic but not likely to inbound traffic. If you would like to see if a common port (HTTP, FTP, PPTP, SMTP, etc) is open to Inbound connections use ShildsUP and http://www.grc.com , it's a nice tool since a lot of ISPs block common ports for security, and no download is required.
