finding ip address email sent using

stolen laptop and i have no emails saved of emails sent just before it was stolen. have been told if i can find the ip address of someone who sent me an email address then that might help me by using the ip address of my computer. i have been told that a friend who sent me an email before it was stolen, has not cleared their call logs recently and may have info. they sent their email through sky using microsoft outlook and os is vista. can anyone please help, or advise on how to track my computer (when its online). I have the serial number but thats all. someone says that a "footprint" has been seen of it,whatever that means and mentioned mac address as maybe helping (whatever mac address is). PLEASE HELP!

I think you are being given bad advice. There is really no way, without additional hardware or software in the computer, that you can track your stolen computer. The IP address of someone who has sent you an email is about as much use for this purpose as their telephone number. MAC addresses are only easily traced on the same local network - in any case, do you know the MAC of your computer? I doubt it.
