I have a gateway 400d4 and an hp dv8000. I want to tranfer files from the gateway to the hp and bought a firewire. Once I plug in the firewire, I get a "1394 connection" under network connections, but I don't knowhow to transfer the files. Please give me a step by step how to set up a file transfer using a firewire.

If you do nothing to the IP address they will default to a APIPA range between the two. You then share a folder on at least one machine. Then go to second machine and put \\othermachine name\share name in internet explorer or explorer. You can use \\ip address\share name if you use ipconfig to see ip address of other machine.
If you use computer name it may take quite some time to get it working. Windows workstation name setup is not as good as using the IP address.
