File Sharing with Router

Hey, I've recently bought a laptop and have been running ICS with my desktop pc fine for the past month or so, but I've recently bought a router [U.S Robotics 8000A] and the internet works fine on both comps, but I cannot file share, I've ensured that the microsoft firewalls are not enabled and that file sharing is on both comps, there is an integrated firewall on the router, I have fiddled with the settings but still nothing, I can ping the desktop with my laptop but not vice versa, I've tried using both DHCP and Static IP addresses, both OS's are Windows XP, laptop is on home, and desktop is professional. Any help would be much appreciated. I have also looked around at other posts but I can't seem to find any help

I have recently installed SP2 yeah, but it was still working fine, it's just since I added the router into play, sometimes it says that I don't have the rights to access Mshome, but sometimes it lets me in mshome but won't let me into either comp.

it's a U.S Robotics Router, Model Number: USR018000A, the user guide given is not very helpful in my opinion, thanks for trying to help by the way, it's appreciated.

didnt check the spec's on that router, but most of them will not filter traffic between the local subnet. Actually I dont think that any SOHO broadband router will. I'm liking the SP2 direction.
Do you have a switch or hub lying around. You can always drop it in place of the router. To eliminate or confirm your suspicion. You wont have internet access, but you can still see if netbios works.

No, I don't have a hub or switch, but I ran a network wizard yesterday and it created a network bridge for some reason which I didn't not want, so I deleted it and then file sharing worked, but I changed a setting by mistake and can't get it back now :s
