I am new to networking. I have installed Linksys router to my two pc's and installed it successfully to the DSL modem. Now, I am trying to do file sharing between the two machines, one uses WinMe & the other WiN98se. Starting with WInMe, I followed the windows settings:
START>CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK>FILE & Print Sharing

It installed successfully. I believe I made 'MYDOCUMENT' folder 'file shared' because I see the little hand on the folder. It then asks to save the program on floppy disk to be used on Win98, so I did that. On the Win98 pc, I ran the floppy and it says there are no network adapter. Here I am lost. My network adapter works as I can surf the internet. What to do next?

Sorry, but have you checked the usual, IP address, subnet mask, workgroup name.
Both machines should have IP/TCP installed with the address 192.168.0.1 on one and 192.168.0.2 on the other. They should both have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and they should both have the same workgroup entered.
Good fun ehh?
Chris

And plus don't use a linksys router they got a NAT firewall that there is no way to turn off so you won't be able to do file sharing!

Won't be able to file share using a linksys router??? Sorry , but you CAN share files. I do it everyday on a home network.

As for your question Ray H, since you're not that experienced, forget about using the wizard to connect the two computers. Install the NetBEUI protocol on both machines. This is the simplest protocol for home file and print sharing.

Right click on network neighborhood, choose properties. Right click on your network card connection, choose properties. Then choose install->protocol->add. NetBEUI should be listed as an available protocol.

Paul H,
I setup the NetBEUI protocol and Win98 was able to see WinMe but not the other way around. WinMe system still does not show the network icon when I double click onto NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD. At least I was able to do file sharing on the Win98 system and that is a major improvement than before. Thanks once again.
