OS: Win 98 and XP
CPU/Ram: Athlon XP2000
Comment:

I have just started the whole networking thing and I have a couple of questions. I have a cable modem, a Linksys 8 port cable DSL router and two machines connected to the router one with win98 and the other with XP. My questions are:

1. Can I safely turn on file sharing and share files between the two computers?

2. Do I need to run Zone Alarm on the router or on the individual machines?

3. What if any safety concerns should I be aware of?

XP is spyware.
Your ok for now as long as you don't do anything illegal.
You should have a current version of antivirus software and a current backup of your systems.
Don't download any exe or zip off the internet unless you dam well know that it's a safe site.
Avoid file sharing over the internet until you know which software isn't tainted.

Other concerns would be visiting sites with lots of pop up windows, some leave viruses, and distribution of your email address.

If you or anybody on your network has software installed that is pirated, Microsoft will turn you in and collect the fee.
If you or anybody on your network has lots of copyright files, mp3 or software, that Microsoft CAN prove you don't own the originals, then they will turn you in if there is a collection fee.

XP was designed to snoop and report back to microsoft. They said openly that it was designed to stop copyright theft. They also take your played DVDs and other file info and sell it. It's all in the license, next time read it.

No pc software firewall will stop this reporting because they needed the rights from microsoft to make it.

Lastly XP is a leased not owned OS, microsoft can stop it's function by not renewing it. (Provided you didn't hack out the renewal function.)
