file downloading internet problem

i recently downloaded several files from the internet to my hard drive. when i viewed my desktop, it wasnt there. i tried this with at least 10 other websites and i got the same problem. there was no setup(.exe) program anywhere. i also can't save any office docs from the net. i tried saving them in different locations, but that didnt help either. this is driving me crazy! help would be very grateful.
