I have two computers at home, one with XP Home and the other with Win98. Both are connected to the internet through a hub to a cablemodem. By DHCP, each computer has a valid IP for Internet. Sometimes, both IPs are in the same subnet, but sometimes not. When in the same subnet, there's no problem: each one can see the other in the workgroup, and file and printer sharing is ok. But when not in the same subnet, nothing works. Even connecting via "\\ip\resource" doesn't work. Any idea?

Thanks.

Hi
I have a router on my home network.
It allows traffic for internet to flow
from home net to internet(WAN).
IP's of pc on local lan are 192.168.0.2
pc are all on same subnet then.
THe router uses dhcp with cable modem.
Pc's was NAT so it looks like 1 pc is on
cable modem. This add security also internet
traffic is not allowed though the router like a firewall. Go to http://www.netgear.com
See RT314 Can buy on ebay.com for $49.00 I think. I like mine very much!!!

I know the solution of a router. I don't want to buy a router.

AFAIK, a router doesn't work if i want to play with both computers on the internet at the same time, (for example, Quake 3, UDP) because game server only sees one computer.

Any solution with A HUB?

you cannot see each other when the devices have ip addresses on different subnets because the devices use broadcast so announce themselves.
devices on one subnet will not 'hear' devices on the other subnet.
You cannot use a WINS server, because you do not have one.
Your other option is to create an LMHOSTS file which maps IP addrees to Windows Name.
I forget where you put the LMHOSTS file within the directory structure.
Do a google search to determine details.
Good luck.

I solved it using NetBIOS over IPX/SPX, instead of over TCP/IP.
