How much faster is fiber optic then a GB netwonk? How much more does fiber optic cost? I will be using it for gamin and transfering a lot of files and stuff. I will have about 7 comp.

Thanks!!!

Fibre optic is as fast as the hardware it's connected to. In most cases will be 1Gbs hardware. There is no advantage in connecting 100Kbs hardware to fibre optic and 1Gbs hardware doesn't work to well through copper cable.

Is there like a fibre optic PCI nic card? If so how many $?

i think the 10/100MBPS reffers to

10MBPS if usin standard wire
100MBPS if usin fibre optic

Fiber has a number of applications including ATM and Ethernet. Gigabit copper and gigabit fiber have the same rates. Fiber is not effected the same by distance or electromagnetic interferance [EMF]

I converted our network from 100FX to Gigabit since all the fiber was in place. I had to buy a new backbone switch [$75,000] and Intel Gigabit fiber cards [$750 each] plus fiber patches [$60 each].

If doing gigabit copper, and a number of server boards come with it built in, check out the HP line of switches supporting gigabit copper. You will have to get a switch and cards plus certified patch cords.

Expensive but I am a big fan of speed.

I am confused....

So the reason I connect at 10MBPS on my 10/100 network is that I have crapy cable? If I buy better network cable should I get 100MBPS?

No, Cat5 copper cable is good for a 100Mbs network. If you are only getting 10Mbs, then there is some other reason. That bits per second, not bytes per second. Network speeds are always measured in bits per second.

1Gbs fibre networks is 1 gig bits per second which is around 100 mega bytes per second.

Derk the total thruput is a sum of the nic, the cable, and switch/hub. Some switches need you to set the port to 100mb to get 100mb. Set the card also so the two match.

With 100mbit copper (assuming 100bit capable hardware is installed all round)...does the network typically deliver that? Or does it average more like 50-75 mbits (with 100 being only theorehtical)?

(wow...100mBytes/sec with fiber...can you imagine!?!)
