Im setting up a wireless network for my mothers boss. Its going to consist of 7 computers running 2000/XP with DSL. She wants 4 of the computers (the business computers) to share files and a printer and the other 3 (childrens computers) to just have an internet connection with no file sharing. Is it possible to create two workgroups (one business, one for the kids) and share one printer for both or no? This is my first venture into setting up a wireless network with these requests. Do the wireless cards that you buy come with a connection manager or do I need to download one? If so, what is a good one? I just got done setting up a laptop wirelessly and it would constantly loose its connection when I used windows manager. I later found out that it is notorious for dropping the connection. I switched to the cards manager and it has worked like a charm.

If you put the printer on a print server not a pc both can print to it. Otherwise they all need to be in the same workgroup. The internet only pcs would have to have accounts on the pc sharing the printer which defeats the separation.

If the business computers are the only ones needing to share files and have access to the printer then easy...

For all 7 PCs configure the subnet mask to be 255.255.255.128 with the default gateway being 192.168.1.1 making two subnets.

For the 4 office PCs use IP addresses between the range of 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.127

For the 3 other PCs use between 192.168.1.129 through 192.168.1.254

Place the printer on one of the Office PCs with Printer and file sharing enabled.

You can also have file sharing on the other PCs between them but they won't be able to see the office machines. The office machines won't be able to see them either.
