I have two computers networked together using Ethernet PCI adapters. One PC is using XP (the server) and the other 98se.
I wish to extend the length of the current crossover network cable, and I purchase a new 3m crossover patch lead, and a crossover coupler(called a RJ45 Reverse Cord Coupler). It doesn't work. Do I need a straight coupler or a straight lead? or both??

If you're trying to extend 2 cross over cables with a cross over couple, you have to ensure that the ends of each cable that plug into it are opposites of each other.
Plug one wire in first a look at the colour combination that is going into the coupler. Then take the other wire and plug the end that has a different colour combination from the wire that your first plugged in.
Basically, what happening is that the first cable will cross the signal, then the coupler should cross it again, and the final cable will cross it back to what the original wire had.
If the coupler is straigh through, then both sides of the coupler should have the same colour combination.
