This is my setup: Linksys router, cable modem, 3 pcs. Everything is working pretty perfectly. I have static IPs set on all machines, file and print sharing.. etc... everything seems to be doing well.
However, when I check the machine running WinXP Home, it says it has sent upwards of 85,000,000,000 packets, and received 15. This is after being connected for roughly 6 minutes. I have tried disconnecting, then reconnecting the computer.. disabling and re-enabling the adapter.. even doing the 'repair' thing... it always starts out in the high millions and slowly climbs to the billions.
What is the reason for this? And is there a solution? Is the computer REALLY sending that many packets or could it just be a bug in the networking setup on the computer showing bogus data.
Thanks.

Look at the Link Act lights on the the router. If the one for that link it is blinking off a lot, it is sending data. Then look at the Led on the back of the NIC card where the link plugs into that machine.
See what happened to that number if you unplug the ethernet cable. Does it stop going up.
If so, it sounds like you are infected with a virus or Trojan and are spreading it across the Internet.
Unplug it from the router and run a full Virus scan with an updated AV. Check the Startup list for file names like MSBLAST.exe being started. Or go online and run HouseCall_AV for a online virus scan.
To find out if you are causing problems, get your current IP address (from router WAN Status page) and check it at this link and see if it is listed. Attack Sources

Well nathen you might want to check to se if you have a bad network card...Had a similar problem at my school network...But still listen to Jack cause that is a posibility...
