What tools should I use to get as much charachteristics of the Ethernet network segment as possible: something about reliability, amount of collisions, another types of errors, bandwidth and so on. Interested in tool for any Unix/win OS
Ethereal is a little much. Ethereal is a sniffer that will give you detailed information on the contents of data packets, but it sounds like your not interested in the actual data packets themselves but rather network performance and reliability.
There are a couple of solutions, but they differ if you are in a home enviroment, or a business enviroment. What enviroment are you looking at?
