win98 seems to "reject" my Intel EtherExpress 16 i waz wondering if its the system or the drivers

What error messages do you get & at what stage, while installing drivers, before that or after that?

after restarting it boots in safemode and i half to disable it to start up normaly

Have you checked the irq seting on the network card ?

Is it set to p'n'p?

You could well have a resource conflict with the new network card.
