Put firewalls back on and leave them on. DNS is an IP address. It can be manually entered or automatically or even both. The command ipconfig /all would/should show it. The GUI (MS renamed it and moved it for some odd reason) would show it and allow you to edit that entry.

More numbers are not normally bad. Put the Router's ip, servers's IP and you ISP's IP's in.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

I don't believe windows home server has domains like in 2003 but you can configure a domain name for allowing internet access to your WHS.

Does WHS have a dns server?
Does WHS have active directory and a forest?

From my reading it has neither. I suspect your issue was trying to join a domain vs a workgroup. Join a workgroup and not a domain to see if you complete without errors.

I would add that I suspect the error was server not found.

Jefro I have setting the router firewall fine. All the pcs have our ip and the same preferential DNS (that ones my provider gave me). Only the server has a unique DNS: 127.0.0.1
--------------
For some reason WHS has the core of small business server. Following this
http://www.visualwin.com/
I was able to crete an active directory and a domain.
It works nice with xp (only this morning I have had to set again the domain field because a defrag program cant connect them - and this is a negative point I have to solve with xp -any suggestions?)
Anyway it works because during the tutorial I was asked for windows server 2003 service pack2 disc and for small business server 2003 disc and I putted inside the cdrom my copy of WHS.
Believe me it creates a domain and an active directory.
The fact is I'm not able to configure it at best...I'm a newbie with server OS.
And still that problem with Vista pcs. Please help

This being the case you have a DNS configuration issue.

Workstation needs to have the WHS ip in its first dns entry.

Do this and see if you can't join now.

Yes but I was a little in panic and ddidn't understand as well.
But now it is working fine thanks to you all.
Another question.
Is it normal (because before it did not happen) that the light on the router of a pc is turn off and when I started vista it turn on?
Is it some misconfigured bios setting or as I suspect the lan motherboard controller is going to broken?
I would appreciate your opinions

If the ms dns server hadn't been listed first it wouldn't have worked.

Light on a router lan port going on is nothing to be concerned about. Odds are that pc has wake up on lan [wol] functionality and was just checking to see if the activity it saw was a magic packet.

The fact is I use WOL on that PC and I need it online. ready to receive the magick packet. Instead with light turn off it appears offline and dont wake up at all.
What can I do?
Maybe some service to start?
I appreciate a solution for this.
Thanks

The order of DNS is of no issue. If an IP doesn't respond then the next is tried. That is why we can put a bunch of IP's in.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.
