dumb wireless question

Hi,
Got a dumb question, setup the ssid of the network and changed the password, but I know it should have encryption of some sort.
I know about wep and wpa and now there is wpa2?
Doesn't my wireless card have to support all of these before I could use all of them, not simultanteously, of course.
What do I know WEP is the old less secure one, but I think it is sometimes the only option?
What did I have to select in MS MCE to enable encryption?

your cards feature set has to support some if not all of the available encrypt methods available on the router.
Compare the feature sets between the card and router and choose the most secure available.

your method of encryption depends entirely on what ur devices support.if say ur PDA only supports WEP despite the router being WPA or WPA2 then u will have to use WEP.to be honest domestically WEP is not a problem at all.the only snag with it is that the encryption key is sent across in clear text from the router to the client so if u had the right software to intercept the signal u could obtain the WEP key with relative ease.although this is hardly likely to happen.WPA is more complex algorithim than WEP and thus is far more secure.in any case ur restricted to whatever protocol ur client devices support irrespective of what the router is capable of.IE theres no point in enabling WPA2 if ur devices only support WEP.

encryption for wirless connections is at layer 2 of the OSI model (presenatation layer).layer 3 is mainly for VPN`s and network authentication IE tunnelling MPPE IPSEC etc.this would be the session layer once a connection has been established.
