I'm new - so hope this isn't in the wrong place.

I live in Italy and subscribe to Alice ADSL service. I cannot access the internet. My network icon in the bottom right hand of the screen has the little globe saying I am connected to the internet - yet no pages load, newzbin doesn't work, etc. When I connect thru a VPN service based out of Phoenix everything works on the computer that is connected. Other computers on the network cannot access the internet.

I've tried to ping 4.2.2.2 in CMD with no luck when not connected to the VPN.

I speak very little Italian so I haven't called their tech support line yet.

Any advice?

Thanks!
-Patrick

If your ISP is aliceadsl.it , your DNS entries should be:
217.169.119.69
156.54.249.250

Secondly, what device is 192.168.0.2 ?

Is it a router supplied by the ISP?

192.168.0.2 is a linksys router i bought to broadcast wireless.

i put those dns entries into the tcp/ip v4 property page and then the VPN wouldn't connect. is this the right place to change these? i have the DNS set back to auto now.

what do you think?

I'm confused now. Is your PC connected to the router wireless or wired? If it's wireless, try a cat5 cable.

What is witopia.net ? Is that the VPN connection?

The PC is wired to the linksys router. You're right - witopia is the vpn service.

Open a command prompt when it's not connected to the VPN and ping two servers.

ping google.com

ping 217.169.119.69

What's the results on each?

Then it has to be something wrong with your NIC configuration or a DNS problem. Go to view all connections. How many adapters/connections are listed? What does it say in the TCP/IP properties of each? What brand modem/router is it? Can you open the web interface of the router?

3 adaptors
Local Area Connection, Local Area Connection 2 and Local Area Connection 3.

i believe the first two are the built in ports on the motherboard and the third is the vpn connection. tcp/ipv4 on all of them are on automatic

is the web interface of the router the 192.168.0.1 address? its a linksys - i can access that.

i'm not familiar with the NIC configuration - how do i check this?

thx for you help on this.

Yes, the router should have the address of 192.168.0.1 but that's not what your ipconfig shows in your post on Nov. 10

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2

That could be your problem.

i forgot i changed it a few days ago - i thought there could have been an ip conflict with it and the modem. either .1 or .2 i still have the problem.

Connect the PC directly to the modem and see what happens. Make sure you set the NIC to obtain IP automatically.
