Router: WRT54GS - V.4
ISP: Bellsouth

I have an issue connecting my router to my ISP, though it just may be a setting issue. I am familiar with this router & have had no issues with it while my ISP was Comcast. I just moved to a new neighborhood & my available ISP is Bellsouth.. This DSL service is slightly different than previous service I have had through Bellsouth, this connection does not require a DSL modem. I connect via CAT-5 jack already “linked to fiber” (per Bellsouth tech). I currently have Internet connectivity via my network card directly to CAT-5 jack… But I cannot get the router to resolve with the ISP (Cannot request IP/PPoE address from ISP). I have tried all things suggested from the FAQ’s including:

· Yes the settings are on PPoE & the User name & password are correct.
· Yes both cables work
· Went though power down cycle multiple times..

Interesting thing is the routers orange button & wan button are lit…

Due to the fact that I have no modem, is there a specific setting that I need to alter either on the router or my PC?

since your pc works put its mac address in the router for the wan port mac address.

Odds are BS registered your pcs mac address to a ip address.

Comcast & BellSouth are two different ISP. Each provides users with modem or modem/router for proper connection to their network. You should not use Comcast modem to log on BellSouth. It won't work.

The issue is... Since Bellsouth has achieved connectivity with a direct connection from my PC, they are putting the issue on my router. I guess I can continue to search for answers.. This is really frustrating, because I have never had anything like this before.

I will try the MAC address change tonight; maybe it could be that simple.

All DSL connections require a modem. A router cannot interpret the stuff that comes down a telephone line.

>> I connect via CAT-5 jack already “linked to fiber” (per Bellsouth tech).<<

This suggests to me that Bellsouth is in fact cable, not DSL.

No. BellSouth is a telephone company - a sister to Verizon. As such all phone companies uses either DSL or FiOS Look here.

It might be FIOS or a similar product. Might just be that the modem in in the fancy named box (communication interface) on the side of the house. Might be in the dirt at the front lawn too.

I must assume that Bell offers a router for their product to do exactly what you wish. Demand that they offer some advice on how to connect the router. Bet they offer some crummy advice like "we only support products we sold you!"

I'd put a network sniffer on and see what I needed if I wanted to know how it connected.

Be sure that you didn't need to load and software. You only needed a logon name and password correct?

It's ppoe. How is a sniffer going to tell you anything?

Check and see if your router keeps error logs and see what it tells you whn it tries to login using pppoe. I have also seen sometimes in the past where they load a pppoe client on the pc and when a user put a router in place both the pc and the router were trying to login and bell was only allowing 1 connection so they were booting each other off.

Putting a sniffer on it would tell me alot. If it wouldn't tell you anything then don't do it.

Ok need some clarification. If you connect PPoE then when you connect the Cat5 direct to your PC then you must be running PPoE software on your PC is that correct. Cause if your not running PPoE software on your PC how is it authenticating you or does it even need to authenticate you. I haven't had a chance to look at the router specs or bell south links yet but just though I would ask abouth the PPoE stuff.
