My roommate and I are getting DSL. We don't want cables running everywhere, so I figured we could both just use wireless. Do we still need a router, or can we just go off the modem? (from qwest, not sure what kind it is)

yes you need a wireless router unless you each want to hook up one at a time. Router provides you with two at the same time hookups and protects you from the basic internet trash with NAT.

The best and easiest to use would be a wireless router. That way, you can move your computer (or laptop) around the room.
Another method you could probably get working would be to put one computer by the modem, put wireless nic's on both pc's, and connect them ad-hoc mode. You can then bridge the computer and have the 1st computer share the internet with the 2nd computer. The computer by the modem would always have to be on whenever the other person wanted internet though.

On your another methood the ad-hoc method. well i have been trying fo so long to make that work but without success. here's my setup
laptop connected to adsl usb modem providing 1mb broadband connection. laptop has a wireless card and is set to ad-hoc mode.my desktop in another room has wireless pci card and is again connected to laptop via ad-hoc. i can share files and both can see each other.
I was hoping my desktop will get internet once my laptop is connected. I tried setting up via ICS.Would really like to see this work. I know i have made it work via ethernet cable but i can't do that now.
Look forward to ur reply
simon

I have Qwest DSL myself. I have their Actiontec GT-701wg modem/gateway. It has wireless capabilities built in. So, assuming they give you the same modem, you can activate Wireless from the modem itself.
