I have a dsl modem hooked up to a dlink wireless router gold series. I have two laptops. This one is 2 years old gateway m75 with broadcom built in card and a gateway new laptop with pcmcia dlink card.
The laptop with pcmcia dlink card is always showing 54mbs for dsl speed. My laptop with built in broadcom wireless card, 2 years old, has the dsl speed jumping all over. It goes from 54mbs to 11 to 28 to 8, etc. I disabled the card, rebooted and same problem. I repaired the connection and same problem.
Both laptops are side by side. What could be causing this problem? Do I need more memory on the laptop? Do I need an external dlink wireless card?

54 mbps is not the DSL speed , its your wireless speed to your AP . Your signal is either getting severe interference or the card is going bad or your wireless settings are not setup right.
