I have a usb adsl conection up and working into a pc running win xp home. Is there any way to connect a Mac running OS 8.6 via a crossover cable to share internet access? I have all of the hardware (nics and cable), and I can't afford any more right now (ie a router). I have run the setup wizard on the windows machine, but it doesn't seem to be working. Any thoughts? Thanks for any help.

Did you try setting up Internet Connection Sharing, and use a "crossover" cable.

Did you try pinging the Mac's IP address from the Windows machine?

If you're sure you're getting a good physical connection between the two machines (lights light up?) and the IPs are on the same subnet... I'm not sure what the problem would be. I'm not familar with networking on the Mac... I'm guessing OS 8.6 has a TCP/IP stack that is active out of the box or is it set up for AppleTalk? If you don't get any more advice here you might try posting in the Mac forum? Instead of trying to use ICS on Windows you could try installing a proxy... there's a very simple and free one available at AnalogX.com. The help/readme file included should give you some guidance getting it working.
