Hello,
heres the situation, we have a DSL internet connection, connected to a router, which then is connected to a windows 2000 professional computer, and a hub which has three connections running from it, 2 to computers both XP and then to another hub which has 2 more computers running off of it.

the problem we are having is the internet is SO slow its painful. this happens even if only 1 computer is trying to load a webpage.

i am curious how we can speed it up.

its DHCP with each computer having a static IP address.

does anyone have any suggestions or referances ot read. we struggled to get the connection working so were in no means networking masters but have a basic understanding.

please help tensions are high as we sit and await any page to load.

Here are some points to check....

Slow Network:

1) Virus
2) a faulty NIC (creates 'runt' packets)
3) incompatible NIC - configure to half-duplex/10 or 100 speed
4) bad dns - if pinging netbios name slow, but IP addy fast
5) Slow network browsing - uninstall all protocols except NetBeui & TCP/IP

Hope this helps a lil

Try it with only one system powered on. Then with only a different one powered on. That might give you a clue if one of the systems is causing a problem.

Make sure you have the current firmware level of code in the router. Even a new router could be very backlevel, having set on on the shelf somewhere. Check the vendors web site of info on firmware updates.

Connect to DSLreports with just one computer on and run its tests to see what it tells you about your problem.

Keep in mind, the router could be bad. With just one system connected, can you access the router and its configuration pages at very fast speeds?

With a router, you normally want all systems connected to be set to "Obtain IP address automatically" from the DCHP server in the router, not have static IP addresses, but that would not be your problem.

i dont have NetBeui i tried to install...
control panel->network connections->right click->properties->general->install (after clicking on TCP/IP

but NetBeui was not in there i currently have the following installed.
client for windows, file and printer sharing (which i dont think i need were not sharing anything), Qos Packet Scheduler which i am completely unfamiliar with and TCP/IP

btw were using static ip addresses (random information to put in there)

currently my computer is the only one connected and its slow, at times not all the time but at times it is fast but then almost slows to nothing
slow slow slow fast slow slow slow slow fast.

its a router with the proper new firmwares installed, to a hub, to another hub for my connection. another computer which is also xp and just as slow is router to hub to computer.

how or where would i get NetBeui and do i need file and print sharing? if i am not going to share files orprinter?
