Hi there. I am using SBC Yahoo DSL with an Efficient Works SpeedStream 5100 series modem.
I was expecting to have to use a KPPPoE client to connect, but the modem seems to be doing this by itself(?) I thought there might have been a script installed by the CD that connected me automatically at startup, but apparently this is not the case.Is this a common feature among modern DSL modems? I googled a few terms but can't find any specific information. I would appreciate any replies. Thanks

Your modem doesn't have to be a dumb bridge. Often, they are actually routers (or gateways). Usually, the modem/router has a feature called bridge mode vs. router mode. Bridge mode directs the modem to merely pass the signal to the next device (think like a NIC). This way, you can pick and configure the device which controls the PPPoE login (it could be a router or your PC).
These modem routers usually have a small web server on them with which you can connect via browser and configure bridge mode. Some ISP's will actually set this up for you if you call tech support (they probably all went out of business). You can get your modem model from documentation and search Google for a simple guide (try using your ISP's name in the search) or your ISP might provide the information in their knowledge base. Also, you can look up your ISP at dslreports.com in the forum section and search/ask there.
Usually, you are disavowing technical support by enabling bridge mode. Just learn how to reset the modem before you do anything.
