Hi,
I have a SpeedStream 5200 DSL modem for broadband internet. I used to have cable modem service but i switched to DSL to try it out. Anyway, I can't seem to get my broadband to work with my Linksys Router (model BEFSR41). I had it working perfectly with my cable modem before.
Now, I only seem to have internet connection when the DSL modem is directly hooked up to my computer. If i try to hook it up with my Router it doesn't work, it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Actually the lights flash a little as if the router is trying to authenticate me or something, lights on the modem seem to flash in accordance w/ the router lights flashing, so i know something is going on. BUT, i can't seem to get connectivity.
i have PPPoE selecte, and provided my username/password.. it doesn't seem to be working.
I would greatly appreciate any help regarding this. I wonder if it's anything to do with the modem specifically. I have just recently upgraded my router firmware, that doesn't seem to be doing anything either.
thanks in advance

Where do you have the cables plugged into from the router to the DSL modem? Plug one end into the internet slot on the router. The other does not plug into the WAN slot on the DSL modem. Plug it into one of the ethernet slots. Go back into the configuration of the router and set up your account name and password for PPPOE. You should then be able to connect. Hope this helps.

Most modems are really also routers. They are also often designed to not cooperate with other routers (or sometimes even hosts) without an extra homenetworking package fee. Most modems can be set in bridge mode - where the router functionality is disabled and your connection is passed right on to your router (the one you can control). Then the modem simply becomes a bridge - and your router can log in for you.
Bridge mode gets rid of the configuration details, so if you do set the router to that, you have to hit the reset to get back to the default mode (and remember your name/password).
Try this link to configure bridge mode:
192.168.254.254/brgmode.htmIf it does not work, nevermind.

so here are the details..
My internet connection is comming to the modem first (DSL line) via phoneline. So the basic setup is.. internet connection to Modem.. then the connection from Modem (internet connectivity) to the Router. Then from the router to other computers on my network.

power - used to put power.. duhh :)
usb - to connect modem to pc w/ usb instead of ehternet
ethernet - to connect modem to pc w/ ethernet (the way it's usually done, normally)
DSL - this is where the phone wire from the wall (which brings internet connectivity) to the modemthere is only one ethernet slot where i can stick the ethernet cable from my router into.

i've come across 192.168.254.254 before while i was trying to figure this out. but i can't log into it from my computer.. wonder if that address has been changed on the modem by the ISP. 'cause the ISP shipped the Modem to me, i didn't buy it..thanx for trying.. got any more suggestions? :)

Some ISPs require you to register the MAC address of your router with them. Give them a call and they will provide you with a URL where you can register.

even if they required MAC address registeration.. i can clone a MAC address with my routher (linksys befsr41). this is what i did with my previous ISP (cable internet).. it worked fine after i cloned my modem's IP address into my router.
now with this DSL, cloning and not-cloning doesn't seem to be making a difference as far as connectivity is concerned.

::::: PROBLEM FIXED ::::::
i had to clone the MAC address in my router (BEFSR41) to be a mac address of the physical machine on the machine to which it's connected to.. i guess it doesn't matter which machine.. as long as it's one of the NICs
thanx to all those who i tried, i appreciate your efforts

I seem to be having a similar problem. I have a Westell DSL Modem suplied by BellSouth. I just purchased a SMC router. SMC claims I need modem in Bridging mode to work. I can get into Modem configuration, but don't know how to reconfigure in bridging mode.
Also, I see a MAC clone selection in my router configuration. Will Selecting this help?
