Hello
I just moved in with my mom who has no internet(well dial up but I don't want to tie up the phones all the time) and I was talking to her about gettting DSL and she said that the people who have just moved in next to us (aparment) had to rip up all the phone lines and put in new ones becuase the old ones would not take DSL. The phone lines are from about the 40's. I just wanted to ask you guys if they changed what they used in phone lines and if we would have to rip up the lines to get DSL.

Theey would have replace the old phone lines with copper cable, just like the original. If the phone line had been in since the forties the chances are that it had been broken and repaired numerous times. Each repair will cause a slight loss of signal. Not a problem with voice but is with high speed data. Corrosion would have got in through the insulation with similar problems.
If you naighbour had to have new phone lines installed, the chances are that you will have to do the same. The only people that can tell you for certain is your phone company. They can run checks to check the quality of the line.

Just run your own new line at the terminal where the telephone enters the house.

That wont achieve a lot. Its the line from where it enters the house the telephone exchange. Whats know as the "local Loop" in the UK.
