I am about to leave in a place that have a DSL connection. So far I have been using LAN which is pretty simple... just plug-in the cale in both ends (wall - PC) and you are set.

However, in this place where I am moving in the hole in the wall is smaller than the LAN one - DSL one.

Thus, I am using another cable, but how am I to set up the connection. Do I plug in the new cable in the wall and in my inside PCI modem or do I need some sort of an external modem?

I guess I press a "Creat a New Connection" after that?

ALso one of the other tenants of the house hes left me a code...something like 1111155555. I think it is a code to connect to the network in the house ...where do I input it.

Thank you ...and sorry for the newb question.

I also have cables exactly like those ones (without the modem)that also work for cable television:

However, I have what seems like a telephone line above them( it should not be a telephone line however).

SO..do I use those cables with an external modem - OR- do I use the "telephone" cable to connect the wall to my in-build modem ?

Who is your internet service provider, what type of broadband do they offer ?

Obviously speaking to your new ISP would of course solve the problem!

You may not have a shared DSL Broadband connection, you may have to setup your own....it seems rather vague.

You have to know what kind of connection before we can help . DSL comes in on a smaller rj11 plug which goes to a DSL modem which will then have the common ethernet rj45 plug in back which you plug your pc into . You have know whether DSL is actually fed to that outlet or not though you can't just assume its there , whoever you rented the place form should be able to tell you that . For all you know you may just have a simple dialine on that rj11 and you would be limited to dialup.

I'm with viper. You need to have a DSL modem in order to connect to DSL. Sounds like the wall jack is RJ-11, which indeed is used for a telephone and DSL. If that phone jack is indeed for both, then you'd need a filter and a modem to connect. Plug a phone into the jack and see if you have a dial tone.

The code they left you may be an authentication code to a Router. I would recommend talking with one of the other tenants and ask, or contact the person who originally gave you the information. There's not enough here to make a determination of what exactly it is you need to do.

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.
