OS: MS-DOS 6.22
CPU/Ram: Athlon 1700+
Comment:

I'm using MS-DOS v6.22 and I need a DOS file manager (or "shell") that is also capable of accessing files across a home network. (Other PC's running Win 98SE and Win ME.) Something like Windows Explorer with 'file sharing' enabled - only for DOS.

Oh, and I'm on a tight budget at the moment. So it needs to be either freeware, public domain, or shareware.

You may have to scour the Internet, but I think Microsoft Client for DOS is still available. You may also be able to get DOS drivers for your network interface in the driver package for you adapter.

Yes, Network Client 3.0 has a GUI, you need to install both Client and Server, you only need the TCP/IP protocol:

Though personally I would recommend Lantastic as more efficiently uses base memory:

Thanks for the help guys.
I believe that is what I was looking for.

However, nearly all download links on the internet for MS Network Client 3.0 (and server) are from the Microsoft ftp server... which seems to no longer be running. So it's very hard to find a working download.

I finally found the Client software (DSK3-1.exe and DSK3-2.EXE) by doing a search with www.filesearching.com/advanced/. One has to be careful, however, as there are different version of MS Network Client. For instance, there is a version for Lanman for OS/2 and one for RAS. I believe the correct DSK3-1.exe has a size of 864723 bytes and the correct DSK3-2.exe has a size of 288142 bytes.

And after considerable dead ends, I finally found the Server update package. It's mentioned in this archive:

http://www.gaby.de/ftp/pub/win3x/archive/

Unfortunately, the Server and Client software both hog up a lot of conventional memory. Some of it can be moved to upper memory, but it's still large.

The "Lantastic" program sounds great, but at $119 for a single user it's way beyond my budget. (Why not try the licensing scheme some other software vendors swear by: 'Free for personal use / purchase for business use'?) There's an evaluation download, but that merely has the Windows client. You have to register to get the DOS client/server...

Forgot to mention: The Server update file is named "WG1049.EXE"

But I just found another solution:

Invisible LAN Operating System (from Invisible Software)
http://www.invisiblesoft.com/invlan/software.html

It seems to have much the same features. Invisible LAN used to be commercial and bundled with their LAN cards. But they've had to move on to other things, so they've abandoned support and released this as freeware. The DOS version has "command-line utilities and menu-driven interface", while the Windows versions use a graphical interface.

I found that via this informative page on DOS Networking: http://www.dossolutions.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/network.htm

And that I found that from this old (2004) forum post by user 4004:

Thanks 4004.

Invisible LAN has one drawback, it does not use TCP/IP...........
