I have an SMC 4 port router that I intended to use with my cable modem on my XP box. I know this router works with DSL because I had it set up at a friends house, and it worked fine.
Here is my delimma. When I follow the instructions that SMC 'tech support???' sent me, I get the following message:
'An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection. Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.'According to the instructions, this (IPCONFIG/RENEW) is the last step in the basic setup process before getting connected. Everything up to that point works well, or at least the way it is supposed to.
Since I can't seem to find anyone els e that has an answer, what would you suggest I do?

Check to see if the DHCP Server on the Barricade is enabled. If it is disabled you will not be able to renew. Hope that helps.

I had the same problem...turns out it was my network card. I replaced my D-Link card and everything worked fine.

Hi,
I realise that the SMC Barricade / XP problem was posted a while back but I had exactly the same problem but after much experimentation, I found the cause of my problem.
I went to Network Connections / double clicked on Network Bridge / selected Properties / unchecked Local Area Connection.
This automatically placed my Local Area Connection under the LAN or high-speed Internet heading and everything worked.
XP immediatly contacted the router which assigned the necessary TCP/IP details and bingo!
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Ken.

This is also caused by windows xp being told to be a firewall. I am not in front of my xp box at the moment, but basically under the network properties there is an option to use internet connection sharing and/or enable firewall, you need to disable this.

I got the same error and tried the above
remedies. I am still getting the same "An
error occured while renewing interface
Local Area Connection. Unable to contact
your DHCP server. Request has timed
out." message. I get it with both my
wireless (Linksys) and Kingston NICs. I
checked that the card is not the problem (I
connected directly with a static IP with the
Kingston card). HELP!I am running XP Pro, SMC Barricade - my mac runs fine off the dhcp server.
