Subject: Does my Wireless card connectOS: xpCPU/Ram: Centrino/ 512mbModel/Manufacturer: sony vaio pm730 |
Comment: I have a sony vaio pm730 Centrino with supposed wireless technology built in. I have a Thompson speedtouch 576 wirless router. I have AOL!! (need i say more) I cannot connect my laptop to the router? Does my Wireless card connect straight to the router or do I need a wireless adapter in order to connect the two devices. I have checked the wlan switch and coneections, but my laptop cannot "see" the Thompson speedtouch 576 router. Below is the set up Wireless enabled Phoneline>Dsl filter>Router>ethernet cable to laptop which when removed loses my internet connection? (wireless) I have followed all of the instructions on the CD and have even been to the thompson website but im really stuck...

Reply: (edit)You said "Wireless enabled Phoneline>Dsl filter>Router>ethernet cable". That's incorrect. You don't connect the DSL filter to the DSL connection. You only use the filters on the phones in your home. NOT the DSL connection. So, the phoneline goes directly from the walljack into your DSL Router/Modem. If you also have need for a phone on that same line, then you use a splitter (provided with your modem) and connect the DSL filter ONLY to the side that you're connecting the phone line to. You say "cable to laptop which when removed loses my internet connection? (wireless)". No. If you are using an ethernet cable from the router to the laptop, that is not a wireless connection. Are you positive you have a wireless card in your laptop? Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Reply: (edit)CENTRINO is a "CeleronM with Intel Chipset and Wireless Technology" as a package. The router needs to have wireless access setup, have you actually read the router manual ??

Reply: (edit)I used the Aol install Disk for the wireless router set up as they don't provide a "manual" maybe because aol provide the router with the wirless broadband package?. Ive been to network settings but the laptop doesn't see the router(which I am treating as an external modem) , there is aol and an aol dialler. Ive been into device manager, no device with speedtouch is listed either. There are no other connections listed, other than Lan ones. I have been on the thompson website and its not very comprehensive. "You said "Wireless enabled Phoneline>Dsl filter>Router>ethernet cable". That's incorrect" Okay i got the order wrong, Laptop(via ethernet 100/10 yellow garden hose type)>router >dsl filter>phonejack. If this is the case "CENTRINO is a "CeleronM with Intel Chipset and Wireless Technology" as a package."
I should in theory, be able to remove the ethernet cable and connect to the router, right?

Reply: (edit)Regardless of the "order", direct or reversed, you still have the physical connection incorrect. The filter does NOT get attached in any way to the DSL modem/router. If AOL is your provider, contact their support. They would be the best ones to provide you with the proper information you need. Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Reply: (edit)Okay, thanks, Please stick with me here, as it is deviating from my real problem. When I connected my laptop to the internet via the ethernet cable, My filter was installed (in the order described) , as the router/AOL install disk told me to do that, ergo AOL have already told me how to set up the filter, and it works fine. My problem is when I remove the ethernet cable from my laptop My laptop doesn't connect to the router or internet? I am trying to establish if i need wireless 121g usb adapter for my laptop.

Reply: (edit)You already have everything you need to connect. Make sure wireless on your computer is turned on then access the router configuration page and make sure wireless is turned on there as well and that it is sending out ssid information.

Reply: (edit)And as has been stated before, remove that filter, you are slowing your DSL connection immensly by having it in there. DSL filters only go on phone jacks that have telephones and dial up modems installed, not connected to the DSL modem.

Reply: (edit)Thanks so far to all but.. Ref "DSL filters only go on phone jacks that have telephones and dial up modems installed, not connected to the DSL modem" The install CD tells me to connect the router Via a Dsl filter? Also this is the only line into the property, So I would surely need to split the signal to the phone anyway?

Reply: (edit)Well, I have to apologize, I just went to AOL and looked at their install guide and it does show a filter in front of the router. I have installed quite a few DSL connections, and none ,until AOL require a filter in that location. Have you been able to access the Router configuration page to make sure wireless is enabled?

Reply: (edit)Here is a link to the Router manual, http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/pdf/Ma... , you can tell if wireless is turned on by looking at the wlan led on the front of the router, if it is lit then wireless is enabled, if it is green then wireless is secured with WPA, if amber then it is secured with WEP, if it is red then it is not secured. Hope this helps, Merry Christmas!!
