do i need a router?

i have 10 computers connected to a switch. if i get a direct internet connection and connect it to the switch, will all the computers be able to browse the Internet? btw, i'll be getting 8 ip's

If you buy a SOHO router, connect your highspeed modem to it's WAN port and then use a crossover cable to connect a LAN port on the router to the switch then all 10 PC's will be able to get on the internet and because a SOHO router comes with NAT, you won't need 8 IP's from your provider.

thanks. yep that's set-up would be ideal.
however considering my current configuration with the high speed modem directly connected to the switch, does this mean that only 8 computers would be able to get on the internet?

That would be correct. Additionally they would be at the mercy of the internet since there wouldn't even be NAT let alone a firewall between them and the bad guys.
