Hey everyone
I currently have a network of about 40 workstations that link to internet through a cisco soho 78 dsl modem/router attached to my hub. Curently there no ports mapped to any computers behind the router and therefore incoming traffic is not posible and i am not running any web servers or anythig so i was thinking do i really need a firewall? how safe is my network? Thanks

Decent corporate firewalling deny unused outgoing port. Then yes, you should set fw rules on your cisco router.

The cisco router that i have was given to me by my ISP and they do the programing for it, i dont. I dont even know how to link to it to see what its set to. And i dont think it has a firewall. How do i go about scanning the ports on it to see which one is open?

the cisco is a firewall - go to their web site and read something about it.
Most isp's set up the features for a business environment - call them and ask.

I think the cisco soho 78 DOES have a firewall but i dont think it is enabled at this time. Because i rememmber the guy from the isp saying i need to set my own up or pay them an arm and a leg to set the cisco soho 78's built in firewall enabled.
Even if i setup this firewall, do you think my network would be safe? do you have any other suggestions? should i consider any other solutions? remember that i dont have incoming trafic and i am not running a web server or anything like that.

Its safe. Dont worry. Extra security use intrusion detection software. It will alert you if any attack.
To scan ports use network scanner like languard free stuff. It will show open ports.
disable print and file sharing if you dont need it

I will look into an intrusion detection software. Should i install that on my file server? PDC? is there one that you would recomend? I will also look into the languard stuff. I have print servers that share printers and my file server has file sharing enabled, but there are no peer to peer sharing or workstations sharing printers or files.

Here is a good site that you can scan your open ports with.
http://scan.sygate.com/
If you have any questions please let me know.

I tried that site and i got this
Trying to gather information from your web browser...
Operating System = Windows 2000
Browser = Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01Trying to find out your computer name...
Unable to determine your computer name!
Trying to find out what services you are running...
Unable to detect any running services!
What does this mean? are my ports open or closed?
